CS173 Informal Lab Sessions
There will be no regularly-scheduled lab sessions for CSC 173. During
the second week of classes, however, there will be a one-time series
of optional labs to provide students an opportunity for hands-on
assistance. These sessions will be held in the 3rd floor Hylan Lab at
the following times:
- Monday, September 9, 2-3 Josh
- Tuesday, September 10, 11-12 Gautam
- Wednesday, September 11, 5-6 Xipeng
- Friday, September 13, 2-3 Gautam
The basic information to be covered includes:
- creating a shell
- basic commands (man/cd/pwd/mkdir/rmdir/cp/rm/chmod/&/ps/kill/jobs)
- setting up the path
- basic programs
- running the editor (emacs)
- getting a .emacs
- basic commands
- using meta/control keys
- open/save/close
- switching buffers
- splitting the window
- closing emacs
- editing:
- start/end of line/file
- delete lines
- copy/paste
- info files
- compiling/running a Java/C program
- setting up access to the newsgroup. ur.cs173
- test posting to ur.test
- Mozilla/netscape are options for registering for the newsgroup
- instructions for remotely logging in using skeys
- instructions for establishing an x-session
- starting WebTermX
- setting the DISPLAY variable
